1 - In favour of a moderate use of countertransference: the history and the present situation (Franco de Masi) / Savca Victor

Abstract: Countertransference is one of the mostimportant tools of the analytic work. Inthis paper, I will try to show howcountertransference has been considered indifferent ways according to theimportance paid to the analyst'ssubjectivity. One important problemconcerns the therapeutic value of theelaboration of countertransference. Myhypothesis is that this necessary process isnot enough to promote the therapeuticprogress. I think that the analysis ofcountertransference is essential in order tokeep the analytic process open but it is nota true therapeutic tool per se. The analystshould constantly and eagerly integratethe patient's world with every element(memories, reconstructions, considerationson life experiences, including his own) thatcan be useful in widening the patient'semotional life. The analytic relationship depends on theanalyst’s capacity to create and maintainin his mind a place for the patient (for hishistory, his difficulties and his tacit request for mental and emotivedevelopment) and on the patient’sdisposition to consider the analyst as atransformative object that is indispensablefor his growth. The analytic processcontinues and progresses as long as thisrelationship remains alive. In this perspective, the analysis ofcountertransference plays a moderate andself-controlled role. Read more

Abstract: This article is available in French only. The purpose of this paper is to explore – bymeans of contemporary psychoanalyticaltheories – the nuances and the sense ofsilence, of primitive, non-verbal, affective, archaic communication in thepsychoanalytical work, with a special focusnot only on distinguishing and analyzingthe transference/countertransferencemovements but also on the destiny of the unheard and unsaid in creating psychicsense, as well as on the essential significancein the analyst-analysand relationship. 3 - Le Contre-Transfert dans la Clinique Contemporaine. Une séance déplacée (Michel Vincent) / Savca Victor

Abstract: This article is available in French only. The setting can be seen as the keeper of thepsychoanalyst’s ethics. A very banal≪ agieren ≫, a session displacement coversand then clarifies what was, until thattime, a rather obscure aspect of thetransference/countertransferencerelationship. For this purpose, a wellarrangeddivan and a safe setting enablethe “reading” of the touch that the patientand the analyst leave on them. A sequenceclearly shows that this setting agreed upontogether with the patient must be protectedagainst external and internal attacks. Thesetting safeguards the analyst and theanalysand against any unappropriate, ambiguous, in other words sexualcharacter that may be associated with theaction involved in any treatment. Therefore, the partners of thepsychoanalytical process are protectedagainst any redoubtable sexualizationduring the psychoanalytical process. Read more

4 - The countertransference, the analyst’s personality and the way in which the analytical relation develops in time (Georgiana Dobrescu) / Savca Victor

Abstract: In this paper, the author tries to analyze theway in which an analyst understands andmanages countertransference during time. The author asks herself in which way theanalyst’s counterstransference is affected/influenced by his/her professional status(beginner analyst, experienced analyst, belonging to some theoretical psychoanalyticalschools, etc); also, if countertransference isaffected by some significant events from theanalyst’s life which can happen during theanalysis with a patient. It is possible/wished/recommended that allthese events from the analyst’s life should bekept under control by the analyst so thatthey do not enter the analytical space of thesessions; or, just the opposite, everythingthat the analyst feels and thinks during the analysis with his/her patients must be takeninto consideration and analyzed. The paper will analyze countertransferencefrom Winnicott’s writings ‘The use of theobject’ and ‘the mirror role of mother’ andOgden’s writing ‘The analytic third’, ‘Thedream-thinking’ and the ‘reverie’. 5 - The rule of abstinence and countertransference (Vasile Dem. Zamfirescu) / Savca Victor

Abstract: My contribution debates the relationshipbetween the rule of abstinence andcountertransference, existing much moreimplicitly than explicitly in the specializedstudies. I discern three moments: exclusionof countertransference by the demand ofabstinence as a rule; restraining theabstinence rule to neurotic disorders andemphasizing the importance of noticing andexpressing countertransference for thepsychotic pathology and borderline;exclusion of the rule of abstinence and theassertion, as a substitute, of the “optimalgratification” principle, which promotes theexpression of countertransference, a validprinciple for the neurotic disorders too. By pointing out the one-sided extreme pointsof view, I put forward: “the principle of theoptimal facilitation of the analysis” as analternative to overcome one-sided attitudesinside a balanced synthesis. 6 - Is it possible to measure countertransference? (Horst Kaechele & Ingrid Ergardt) / Savca Victor

Abstract: Empirical research on the treatment processhas long time - for good reasons - avoided toeven try to measure countertransference, although this dimension of thepsychoanalytic work has gained inmomentum over the last decades. Our paper reports on various efforts of howto approach such a methodology formeasuring such an elusive concept. Thedistinction between habitual patterns ofcountertransference and situational affectivereactions seems most likely a helpful way toapproach the topic. Recent empirical researchand measures on countertransference will bepresented and discussed. Read more

Abstract: The paper is structured around extremely current interrogations onthe contemporary dynamics of psychoanalysis. I’m referring to the questionto what extent is the analyst’s countertransference influenced by the data ofhis personal psychology, as reflected in the professional training and in thechoices of his personal history.
